I've Got Sunshine... in Hugh Grant Movies

British humor and Hugh Grant. The perfect ingredients for a romantic comedy.

Yes, I'm fresh off watching Music and Lyrics. It's not my typical art house or acting intensive film. But I liked it, I laughed with it, and I enjoyed it.

One thing about the British brand of comedy is you don't just slump in that reclinable theater seats we have nowadays and laugh your tongue out about something really stupid it makes you cry. No, they require you to use at least half a micro-spatula of your brain.

The jokes are not laid out in plastic platter nor the punchlines as simple as any knee-jerk reaction. They sort of make you think. And if you're not quick enough you'll totally lose the joke altogether.

It's not just one occasion that my friend Gilu and I found ourselves the only ones laughing at the spasmic lines thrown by Grant and Drew Barrymore. But it was satisfying to hear everyone join in one huge chuckle whenever the jokes take an almost physical form.

Mostly I love the British sense of humor because it's very sarcastic and they force you to laugh at your own ridiculousness.

My favorite part in the movie was when Grant was convincing his songwriting partner about the power of pop music. "I've got sunshine on a cloudy day/When it's cold outside I've got the month of May..."

Oh yeah, this is poetry indeed.
