So Jesus Didn't Rise From The Dead...Big Deal!

The new James Cameron and Discovery Channel documentary "The Lost Tomb of Jesus" is rising blood pressures again, as expected.

The 1st century tomb in question was discovered 27 years ago supposedly hiding the sarcophagi of the whole Jesus family:

This is the said tomb of Jesus and his family where 10 caskets with human remains were found

"The inscribed boxes, with some human remains still inside, apparently was crammed into an old cave near Talpiyot, an industrial zone in Jerusalem, alongside nine other two thousand year-old sarcophagi allegedly containing the bodies of Mother Mary, the carpenter Joseph, a little-known brother called Jofah, Mary Magdalene, and, most surprisingly of all, Jesus's son Judah, who technically could be considered the grandson of God." (from Israeli Bites)

So Jesus didn't walk out of that big tomb after being buried for three days, and he got married and had a kid. And, yes, that means he had sex! But I really don't get all these outrage.

Sure he wasn't celibate and his mother wasn't a virgin, what's the big deal? I can dig that. I still think He's the dude and I wouldn't want to incur His wrath for fear that I will be sent to hell (though I don't believe in hell either). My point is my faith isn't faltering and I honestly still like the guy.

We're supposed to be superior intelligent creatures here. We very well know that a man can't die and simply wake up to fly away to heaven. The Bible and the gospels were written as poetry, and they're the greatest poetry of all time. So people, don't take everything literally!

And if you're telling me that the cornerstone of my faith is actually a dead man rising, man, that's really news to me. Because I thought it was about love and how it can resurrect our spirits, figuratively speaking.

You raise some very important questions.

The Bible doesn't just claim that Jesus rose from the dead, it insists that it was a "big deal". As Paul says in 1 Corinthians 15: 13-14: "But if there is no resurrection of the dead, not even Christ has been raised; and if Christ has not been raised, then our preaching is vain, your faith also is vain." Paul is basically posing the question: If you don't believe that Jesus rose from the dead, then why are you wasting your time with Christianity?

You say: "if you're telling me that the cornerstone of my faith is actually a dead man rising, man, that's really news to me."

Extra! Extra! That's exactly what I'm telling you and that's what the Bible says :-)

"Because I thought it was about love and how it can resurrect our spirits, figuratively speaking."

Love is what prompted God to take on human form and give His life to pay for every mistake that you and I and every human that ever lived have ever made. In that sense, love paid the price for our spirits to be resurrected in a very literal sense!

So does this tomb prove that Jesus didn't rise from the dead? No, not at all. Virtually all legitimate scholars and scientists have been highly critical of the methods used to determine that this might be Jesus' tomb. Nobody of any academic merit gives the idea any credence.

Thank you Jim :)

Maybe I am in the wrong religion after all. Or maybe I'm just one of the very small minority who puts more weight on Jesus' teaching and all he stood for rather than focusing on areas that are subject to much debate.
